It seems like American discussions on radical, liberal Islam dominate the global zeitgeist right now. Are you ok with that? At this Friday prayer IMI’s chair Halima Gosai Hussain will deliver a khutbah on the relationship between radical liberal Islam in the UK and the US. How do we contextualise the racial and gender-based injustices that take place in both countries while showing solidarity to each other? How to we give stories from the rest of the world due attention? Dr Amina Wadud will lead the congregation in a du’a after the prayer. There will be a BSL interpreter at the event.
Dr. Amina Wadud is Professor Emeritus of Islamic Studies and Visiting Scholar at the Starr King School for the Ministry. Her first book, Qur’an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman’s Perspective—almost a quarter of a century old and translated into a dozen languages—is a classic in Islamic feminism. Her Second book, Inside the Gender Jihad, takes her theological work from theory to policy reform and human rights. As an international consultant on Islam and gender and public intellectual, she is an on the International Advisory Group for www.musawah.org (a global reform movement) and part of the Arcus Foundation Islam Advisory Group. With a generous grant from the Arcus foundation she is currently doing research on Sexual Diversity and Human dignity in Islamic Primary sources with the Duke Islamic Studies Center. Since an historic mixed gender Friday Prayer in 2005, she is best known as the Lady Imam.
As with all IMI events, Muslims of all denominations are welcome to pray with us, and peoples of all faiths and none. Children, toddlers and babies are also welcome and have free reign to climb on adults during prayer. You can stand or sit wherever you feel comfortable.
As we are an entirely voluntary run and funded organisation, a donation in advance or on the day of only £5 helps towards us organising events like this and securing our own mosque space eventually, if you can donate more than that would also be most welcomed. Please register your attendance below:
